About Cunnamulla

Cunnamulla is a town rich in heritage and colourful characters, like the ‘Cunnamulla Fella” in the Slim Dusty song.  It’s a town that has seen the ‘Golden Age of Wool’ as well as many hardships but remains a tight-knit community and a delight to visit.

The township of Cunnamulla began as a settlement on the crossroads of two major stock routes soon after William Landsborough explored the region in 1858.  It takes its name from the aboriginal term meaning “Long stretch of the river”.

While the wool industry has been the economic mainstay during the 1800s and most of the 1900s, the township has recently seen the emergence of other industries such as table grapes, beekeeping, organic wheat, goats, cattle, macropod, and tourism.

The town has had its fair share of eccentrics and infamous characters such as Joseph Wells who held up the bank in 1880, was caught and sentenced to hang.  He was the last man in Australia to hang for such a crime.

Cunnamulla, has long been identified with sporting prowess, and prided itself on the number of clubs and teams that are still active and well supported within the community.

Whether your coming here via the Matilda Highway; or the Adventure way, there is heaps to do and see, so why not nominate soon, then allow yourself at least a week to visit all the sites throughout the region.
